Games have different dynamics, mechanisms, and objectives. There are games for socialization and character building, defense of territories, language learning, and anything else you can think of.And then, there are games that help us deal with our own processes, emotions, and life experiences – like grieving. That's the case of Spiritfarer, "a cozy management game about dying. As ferrymaster to the deceased, build a boat to explore the world, care for your spirit friends, and release them into the afterlife."I'm a huge fan of platformers, and this game has a soft spot in my heart. The art is simply beautiful, characters are emotionally deep (and well-developed), and the soundtrackis incredibly pleasing. You'll receive letters and drawings, interact with your boat and other spirits, and assess how you make decisions. You might also drop some tears (don't make me say 'I told you so' hehe).#GameLoc#GameRecommendation#BBGLanguages

One of my favorite games :) I even wrote a piece about how its game mechanics emphasize their message of accepting death and moving on: https://www.superjumpmagazine.com/accepting-death-in-spiritfarer/

Great experience, heartwarming and engaging story in this one is an incredible addition to already mega cozy gameplay. The feeling of attachment to all of the characters and them being relatable is one of the best I've seen. My favourite game of 2020 for sure :)

Why is narrative so often an afterthought in game dev?I get it, you gotta get the core mechanics right. You need to have a readable visual hierarchy. You have to get the game in front of players, and you need some level of stability. But even very "simple" games have a theme that makes them GAMES and not tests you take as part of scientific research. An FPS aim trainer has no theme. That's why it's not a game, it's just training.Asteroids could be done without you being a ship and with the objects just being shapes, but it wouldn't be as entertaining. It wouldn't be a game. It would just be a test. Instead, you're trying to survive.Music and story and cinematics play a role in making the game feel like it's supposed to. And that's what we're trying to do in games: make players feel something, create an experience they engage with. The narrative doesn't need to be front and center. It may not be the most important thing (though it certainly is in some games). But ignore it at your peril. #gameproduction #gamedevelopment #gameindustry #narrativedesign

🔍 Are you interested in thrilling, interactive and immersive online games? If yes is the answer then take a read below about what I have been working on this past semester! ⬇️ During this past semester in my ‘Interactive Storytelling’ module at Leeds Trinity University I have been experimenting with the game making software of Twine- ‘an open source tool for telling interactive, non linear stories’💻. My work in the module has culminated in myself creating a thrilling interactive game inspired by the Mission Impossible series of films and is called ‘Mission Unthinkable’! Through the game you have the ability to dive into the world of espionage, adrenaline and create your own path via the storyline YOU choose 🕵️♂️. Will you outsmart the enemy, or will your mission end in disaster? The possibilities are endless but YOU will make these decisions 🤔 .Throughout this 2nd year module I have enjoyed understanding the different ways of telling stories and testing different narrative formats such as Twine & Actionbound. It has been interesting to learn how I can experiment in these non- linear platforms in order to create an innovative world for the reader. A big thank you to Liz Cable for supporting me this semester with my projects. Your feedback has helped propel my game development forward and constant coding skills have been ever insightful 🙂.🔗 Click on the link below to see if you have what it takes to complete ‘Mission Unthinkable’. {You will require a laptop/ computer for optimum performance}.https://lnkd.in/eR8AEDeT#missionimpossible #interactivegaming #twine #gamedevelopment #spythriller #interactivestorytelling #immersivetechnology #leedstrinityuniversity #loveltu #secondyearuniversityAll work shared here is ©Jacob Davison. Hello LinkedIn Community!I'm thrilled to share with you my own-developed FPS game! In this project, the main focus was on engaging in combat with enemies and utilizing strategic gameplay.**Project Features:**- Fast-paced multiplayer experience.- Realistic attack and pursuit mechanics using enemy AI.- Enemies initiate attacks and follow when within a certain range; they disengage when the distance exceeds a set limit.- Custom-designed weapon mechanics, gunfire effects, and VFX.**Development Process:**Creating this project provided a significant opportunity for personal growth, delving into both game design principles and technical intricacies. I learned a great deal about creating enemy AI, detailing weapon mechanics, and integrating special effects.**Behind the Development:**Details about my thoughts during the creation process and the inspiration behind the project can be found on my profile. I've aimed to share insights into the creative process and am excited to share this experience with you.**Visuals and More:**Don't forget to visit my profile to see visuals and more about the project! Hi everyone! After taking some time off and also being down in a funk for a bit from posting content and articles, I've started back up again. This time, I've started my own Substack! Level Up: Gaming, Anime, and Real-Life EXPI believe this platform will give me more freedom in posting a wide array of content and share my thoughts.Similar to a previous article I posted, I want to explore, highlight and showcase how aspects within video games, anime and manga, and cartoons can have practical applications in both our professional and/or personal life. Video games and anime have been a deep passion and influence in my life and I hope to share what I love about them through an analytical lens that draw out inspiration and learnings we can takeaway. My first post on my Substack is explore the team composition and setup in Limbus Company and how this core mechanic can serve as mirrors of our own professional experience in team building and teamwork but also lessons we can take away about each individual's contribution in a team and what we can do to succeed in team building.I'll have many more posts to follow exploring other of my interest areas such as supply chain and just personal musings on my Substack. Check it out and subscribe!#gaming #videogames #business #leadership #teamwork #teambuilding #synergy

Back in the early 2000s, I had a game demo for Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive—a demo I remember playing over and over (despite being dreadful at it!). Fast forward to today, I’ve just finished playing Desperados 3 from Mimimi Games, which has reignited my passion for stealth strategy games.Inspired, I decided to take a shot at recreating some of the core mechanics and designing my own version. This process has introduced me to the AI tools in Unreal Engine, specifically Blackboard and Behavior Trees—something I hadn’t explored before. I’m excited to say the basic structure is now in place!#GameDevelopment #UnrealEngine #AI #StealthStrategy #Desperados #IndieDev #LearningByDoing #Blackboard #BehaviorTrees #GameDesign

There's a lot of debate about the introduction of A.I to the games industry at the moment and the jobs affected; but there's a more light-hearted side of this as well.Several modders have integrated LLMs into games like Starfield and Skyrim to populate the varied characters within the open world environment. The results have gone viral time and time and time again and personally I can't get enough of them. They have the potential to increase the, admittedly already huge, re-playability of these games we love so much. Not only are the players able to have unique conversations and interactions with all of the NPC's, but the NPC's will actually remember them as well in some of these mods, allowing for relationships to develop uniquely over time.I'd love to see how the application of this tech is used once it makes it's way out of the modding space and into professional development. One of the first experiments with LLMs was to put a bunch of them into a simulated town and seeing what they did: (spoiler alert) one of them ends up running a huge campaign for mayor. Will we get to see these kinds of dynamic, populated worlds in the games of the future?#ai #llm #games #openworld #npc #videogames #gamedev #gamedevelopment #gamesindustry
